ACTC Services Overview

This page provides a detailed description of many of the services offered through Ashland Community & Technical College. The services may be located at a particular campus or another; however, the college makes every effort to provide all services students at all campuses. If service is needed at a campus different than one listed, students are encouraged to request that the service be brought to their home campus.

Class Standing

For financial aid or transfer purposes, a student is considered a freshman with less than 29 credits; a sophomore with 30 to 59 credits, and junior with 60 to 89 credits.

The 2007-2008 school year tuition is $115 per credit hour part-time for Kentucky residents; West Virginia residents of Cabell, Mingo and Wayne counties; and Ohio residents of Gallia, Lawrence and Scioto counties. For out-of-state residents, tuition is $345.00 per credit-hour.

NOTE: There is an additional $22 fee per course for KET courses.

Services & Facilities

  • ADVISING & TRANSFER CENTER: The Center in Room 217 at the College Drive Campus offers counseling and guidance, academic advising and help with transfer planning. Transfer planning help includes information on 200+ baccalaureate degree programs at other institutions and checklists for ACTC associate degree programs. Counseling services include free academic and career counseling as well as special student guidance by full-time counselors.

    ACTC also has a full-time Technical Program Advisor at the Roberts Drive Campus.

  • BOOKSTORE: Barnes and Noble Bookstores has entered into a long-term agreement with the Kentucky Community & Technical College System.

  • CAREER RESOURCE/JOB PLACEMENT CENTER: The Center offers assistance to students, graduates, ACTC employees and area adults in making occupational and career decisions. Free services include comprehensive occupational and educational materials, career and personality assessments, resume and interview assistance, and career exploration and personal awareness courses. The Center also helps students and graduates who seek part-time or full-time jobs. Contact Coordinator Nancy Menshouse, College Drive Campus, Room 218 or 326-2199.
  • DISABLED STUDENT SERVICES (DSS): In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the DSS office strives to provide the physical and educational support necessary for students with disabilities to achieve their academic and personal goals. Contact Coordinator Heather Shelton, College Drive Campus, Room 215A or 326-2051.
  • EXTENDED CAMPUS: Through this cooperative college/high school effort, ACTC offers evening classes at East Carter, Greenup and Lawrence County High Schools. Daytime and after-school courses are also offered at many high schools in the five counties of northeastern Kentucky served by ACTC.   • FINANCIAL AID: The Office of Financial Aid offers assistance in completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid); processes and interprets student information to determine aid eligibility, verifies the student's number of hours per semester, makes adjustments and packages all aid; monitors academic eligibility; and authorizes all financial aid and scholarship payments.   • KINDERCOLLEGE/LEARNING ACADEMY: KinderCollege, a partnership of ACTC and the Boyd County Board of Education, is an academic as well as nurturing program. Enrichment activities are supervised and age-appropriate, with attention given to practical living activities that involve role playing and physical development, and a concentration on fine motor skills. The after-school Learning Academy program offers academic enrichment and homework help. Enrollment preference is given to the children of ACTC students on a first-come basis.   • LEARNING ASSISTANCE CENTER: The Center in the Goodpaster Building at the College Drive Campus, has an open student computer lab and incorporates the former Math Lab and Writing/Reading Center. Students may come on their own or on an instructor’s recommendation for individual computer assistance in any subject area. Center hours are 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. Contact Center Coordinator Leliah Wheeler, 326-2182.
  • LIBRARY: The Joseph and Sylvia Mansbach Library on the second floor of the Learning Resource Center at the College Drive Campus, is a research library and computer information center that supports student courses and research. The library has over 40,000 volumes, 1,000 videotapes, and 380 periodical subscriptions. On-line resources include Voyager—a KCTCS library database and catalog, periodical indexes and general information resources. A computer study area has computers for student use. Librarians are available to assist students with research and computer searching. The library is the U.S. Government Documents Depository Library for the Fourth Congressional District. Special collections include the Ashworth Collection for Learning Disabilities, Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center resources for teachers, Ashland Area Labor-Management Council Training Resource Collection, Jesse Stuart and Jean Thomas materials.   • STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES PROGRAM: This federally funded program is designed to support and assist students who are facing academic and personal challenges. Tutorial services are available as well as academic, career, transfer and supportive counseling. Students in this program also can take advantage of informative workshops and cultural activities. All services are free to those students who qualify as low-income or first-generation college students or who have a physical, learning or emotional disability.   • TESTING CENTER: ACTC offers a variety of testing, ranging from ACT testing for future college students, to Business and Industry testing. For academic testing, contact the Testing Center at: 326-2040. For Business and Industry testing focused towards specific job skills or pre-employment testing, contact the Center for Community, Workforce and Economic Development at: 326-2164.
